Tire Inspection UX Benchmark

Eight tire-inspection products compared from scan to report. Real screens, each with its source.

8products
162authentic screens
37video frames with timestamps

Key findings

Limits: desk research. No app was installed; only Tire-kan's web page was opened live, up to its terms checkbox. YouTube blocked video downloads, so frames come only from vendor-hosted videos. Some screens are old (Tire-kan 2019 to 2020, CaRool 2023). "Not observed" means not seen in public material, not absent.

Entry & access

Evidenced

Live entry screen (375x812 emulation). Green Tire-kan branded page: headline 'Smartphone-easy! Tire groove check!' (translation mine), sub-line 'AI diagnoses the wear condition of passenger-car tires from a photo', a mascot robot, an unticked checkbox 'I agree to the terms of use' with an underlined terms link, an orange START button, and notes 'About 10 MB is downloaded on first use' and 'Recommended: Mobile Safari, Android Chrome; other browsers may not work correctly'. No sign-up, login or payment is shown; the agree-checkbox is the only gate.

Observed firsthand

Result of pressing START with the terms checkbox left unticked: the page stayed on the entry screen with no navigation and no visible error message (screenshot taken at 800x600 after the emulation reset, so layout differs; the sub-line now reads 'Add to bookmarks/home screen; regular checks recommended', apparently a rotating message). Shows START is effectively gated by the terms checkbox. I did NOT tick the checkbox (brief forbids accepting terms for the user), so the rest of the flow was not entered.

Observed firsthand

Top of the Terms of Use page (/terms), 'Article 1 (About these Terms)' and 'Article 2 (Service content)': app by Bridgestone Retail Japan Co., Ltd.; service = simple image diagnosis of the wear state of passenger-car summer/winter tires. Rest of the terms read via page text (see documented_text). Translation mine.

Observed firsthand
2 more screens in this stage

Bridgestone official blog (2019-11-13) screenshot of the same entry screen as an earlier version: sub-line then said 'passenger-car SUMMER tire' and the box read 'iOS 11 or later Mobile Safari, Android Chrome'. Shows the entry design is essentially unchanged since 2019 (wording now says 'passenger-car tire' and the iOS version requirement was dropped).

Shown in official demo

App Store screenshot of the separate 'Cockpit / Tire-kan app' home: menu tiles for inspection-result check, tire purchase booking, car maintenance/service booking, safety-inspection booking, oil change booking, tire swap booking. No tire-groove-check tile is shown in the store screenshots. This is the shop/booking app, not the web tool.

Shown in official demo
2

Vehicle & prep

Partial

Official blog screenshot (2019 UI) of the screen shown AFTER the photo is taken: heading 'We will diagnose the tire you photographed', thumbnail of the captured tread with a small 'retake' button, then 'What type of tire is it?' with two photo tiles 'Summer tire' and 'Winter tire'. There is no vehicle selection; the only selection is tire season, asked after capture. Translation mine.

Shown in official demo

Not observed: No vehicle or tire-size selection exists in the public flow (Not observed in any material). Pre-capture preparation (e.g., clean tire, park on flat ground) is Not observed in the tool or guide. The live season-select screen could not be viewed firsthand (behind the terms checkbox).

3

Camera guidance

Evidenced

Live 'User guide' page (/userguide, publicly reachable without agreeing to terms). Section 'How to photograph the tire': photo of a hand holding a phone under a car with a yellow frame on screen, text 'Align both ends of the tire with the yellow frame'. Section 'Shooting points' with green-circle OK vs red-cross NG thumbnails: 'Make sure nothing but the tire appears at top/bottom/left/right' (NG examples: tread too small/with sidewall or road visible) and 'Match the orientation of the tire to the illustration on the capture screen' (NG: tire rotated). Translation mine.

Observed firsthand

Lower part of the user guide: 'Do not shoot the tire at an angle' (NG photo of an oblique tire), then 'When a mounted tire is hard to photograph' with a photo of a phone slipped under the front tire and text 'switch to the front camera and slide the phone diagonally under the tire'; start of 'About the auto-shutter' section. Translation mine.

Observed firsthand

Older (Jan 2020) iPhone screenshot posted by a Tire-kan shop on taiyakan.co.jp: an intro slide with a live-looking tread photo, orange ruler guide lines and the text 'Match both ends of the tire to the guide' / 'Align both ends of the camera-screen guide lines with both ends of the tire. Tapping Shoot starts the in-camera.' The current UI uses a yellow frame instead of the ruler, so this is a previous version.

Shown in official demo
4

Capture method

Partial

Official blog screenshot (2019 UI) of the live camera screen: black viewfinder with an orange frame, a shutter-icon toggle 'AUTO / OFF / ON' at top-left (auto-shutter), camera-flip icon at top-right, a tire/frame illustration in the centre, and the prompt 'Tap the screen to shoot'. Tire-kan logo and mascot bar above, 'Tips' button at left. Shows capture is a single still taken from the live browser camera, not a file upload or video.

Shown in official demo

Shop-staff photo (2019-07) of a hand-held Android phone in Chrome at tirecheck.taiyakan.co.jp showing the capture-confirmation view: tread photo with orange guide lines, vertical text 'Match tire ends to the guide', green 'Retake' and orange 'Diagnose with this photo' buttons. Staff photo of a real device, not a clean screenshot.

Shown in official demo

Not observed: Direct photo-library upload is Not observed (capture appears camera-only). Live capture was not performed firsthand.

5

Quality feedback

Partial

Bottom of the live user guide, section 'If you cannot shoot': (1) allow browser camera access - on iPhone Settings > Safari > turn 'Camera & Microphone Access' on; (2) turn off Low Power Mode - Settings > Battery; (3) recommended browsers: Mobile Safari, Android Chrome. Translation mine. Shows recovery help exists for camera/permission failures.

Observed firsthand

Older (Jan 2020) iPhone screenshot posted by a Tire-kan shop: confirmation of the captured tread with orange ruler guides and two buttons, green 'Retake' and orange 'Diagnose with this photo'. Shows the user can reject a photo before analysis. Current UI differs slightly (see source-derived text).

Shown in official demo

Not observed: I could not upload a test image or a deliberately unsuitable image: that requires ticking the terms checkbox, which the research brief forbids, and calling the API directly would have bypassed the gate. How a non-tire or very dark/blurred image is handled by the server is therefore Not observed.

6

Processing

Evidence gap
Evidence gap

No screenshot of the processing screens: they sit behind the terms checkbox and a real upload. Official blog/press material omits them (Not observed in public material).

Results

Evidenced

Bridgestone press-release image (2019-09-02) of three screens: title screen, tire-type selection screen, and a 'Summer tire diagnosis - Good (良好)' result with mascot, text 'Your tire grooves seem good; for safe driving, also check for cracks and damage; we recommend a monthly professional check at Tire-kan; *result is a guide', buttons 'Retake' / 'Back to TOP', an orange 'Find a nearby Tire-kan' button and tweet/Facebook/LINE share buttons. Translation mine.

Shown in official demo

Official blog (2019-11-13) 'Winter tire diagnosis - Good' result: mascot thumbs-up, same message as the summer result, 'Retake' / 'Back to TOP', and extra line 'Tire pros can diagnose in more detail - you can also reserve an in-store consultation (some stores do not offer reservations)' with an orange 'Find a nearby Tire-kan' button; footer (c) 2019 Bridgestone Retail Japan.

History & sharing

Partial

App Store screenshot of the separate Cockpit / Tire-kan app: 'Inspection results' for a chosen vehicle with colour legend Good (green) / Caution (yellow) / Danger (red) and a tire-position diagram (front-left, front-right, rear-left, rear-right) under 'Summer tire inspection'. This is shop-performed inspection history for members, not results of the web photo check.

Not observed: Saving, comparison, export and history of web-tool results are Not observed in public material. Maintenance history exists only for the shop-inspection data in the Tire-kan app (members).

UX evaluation

  • strengtha Ease of starting and completing a scan

No account or payment: a single checkbox plus START gets the user to a short intro and camera. Flow is capture -> choose summer/winter -> result. Cost: ~10 MB first download and mandatory terms tick.

    Documented
    Evidence: ; ; bridgestone.co.jp/corporate/news/20190902…
  • strengthb Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

Instructions combine a yellow frame, an orientation illustration, OK/NG photo pairs, and a tip for mounted tires (steering lock, front camera under the tire). The user guide is reachable any time (Tips / ? button).

    Observed firsthand
    Evidence: ;
  • riska Ease of starting and completing a scan

Pressing START without the checkbox gave no visible message in my run (page simply stayed), which could confuse first-time users. Real completion time and success rate on typical phones are unknown.

    Observed firsthandHypothesis requiring user testing
    Evidence:
  • riskb Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

Photographing a mounted front tread from a few cm under the car with a phone is physically awkward (the guidance itself suggests slipping the phone under the car); lighting/distance in cm are not specified. Feasibility for older or less mobile users is unproven.

    InferenceHypothesis requiring user testing
    Evidence: s03_intro_slide_incamera_site_image.jpg;
  • weaknessc Handling of poor images, failure, uncertainty

Evidence shows retake/feedback links and camera-permission troubleshooting, but a server-side failure is a plain browser alert, and no 'photo not suitable - retake' result or uncertainty state is evidenced. The terms concede some images cannot be diagnosed. Behaviour with a non-tire/dark/blurred photo was NOT tested.

UX evaluation

  • strengtha Ease of starting and completing a scan

Smartphone-only live-camera scan: pick tyre position, align tread in frame, tap scan or timer, result in about 10 s; no extra hardware or reference object.

    Documented
    Evidence: Play description;
  • strengthd Whether results distinguish measured facts from predictions/recommendations

Result screen separates 'Result' (observation) from 'Recommended Action', and the store text states it is visual guidance, not precision measurement. No numeric measurement is presented that could be mistaken for a gauge reading.

    Shown in official demo
    Evidence: ; Play disclaimer
  • riska Ease of starting and completing a scan

Reviews (2022-2024, legacy) and the 2.1/5 rating suggest startup/camera reliability problems; unclear whether the current version resolved them. Unexplained toggles (Timer / Auto / Gate, Sensitivity) may confuse first-time users.

    DocumentedHypothesis requiring user testing
    Evidence: Play reviews;
  • weaknessb Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

Instructions are brief text (red target, daylight, clean dry tyre, 10-second timer); no distance/angle guide and no illustrated example of which tread area to capture in the current UI. Rear tyres are hard to reach, which the legacy slide only mitigates with the timer.

    DocumentedHypothesis requiring user testing
    Evidence: ;
  • weaknessc Handling of poor images, failure, uncertainty

No error, retake or low-light/blur warning is shown in any public visual; only release-note mentions of reflective/worn tyre handling. Hedged result wording ('Likely OK') is the only uncertainty cue.

UX evaluation

  • strengtha Ease of starting and completing a scan

Home screen offers a clear primary action 'Begin Tire Scan' and a lighter 'Measure Tread Depth Only' path, with large tiles and no visible login wall.

    Shown in official demo
    Evidence:
  • strengthb Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

Each capture step has its own illustrated instruction page with a diagram and plain-language steps; the coin step names the specific coin (US quarter) and camera orientation.

    Shown in official demo
    Evidence: ;
  • riska Ease of starting and completing a scan

Full scan needs several photos (sidewall, tread with coin, optional TIN) while the vendor web page promises 'a single photo'; a mismatch in expectations. Time-to-result unknown.

    DocumentedHypothesis requiring user testing
  • riskb Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

Holding a phone level and parallel to a coin wedged in a groove is a fine-motor task; the line illustration is generic and the instruction text is dense. The sidewall tips are truncated behind the Continue button in the screenshot. Whether users can achieve the intended pose is untested.

UX evaluation

  • strengthe. Whether the report helps a vehicle owner decide next

Summary bullets are plain-language per tire with a two-level action wording (plan replacement soon vs replace now) and a worst-reading-based number; amber/red tile headers add a visual cue; 'See matching tires' leads straight to size-matched products. Missing from visible UI: the legal minimum, time/km estimate, booking button, and professional-inspection prompt.

    Shown in official demo
    Evidence: ;
  • strengthh. Value after the first scan (history, reminders)

Per-vehicle garage, Reports tab with search, 'Last scan' dates, share and PDF export create repeat value; no reminders, trend chart or side-by-side compare is visible. Reports list repeats the same plate for each scan with no delta.

    Shown in official demo
    Evidence: ; ;
  • riskb. Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

The only capture screen visible gives a single line of guidance for the sidewall ('Make sure the brand name, size and DOT code are clearly visible'). Tread-capture guidance is Not observed; the Play text says 'move the camera slowly along the tread' while the Terms say 'photograph the tread at each wheel position'. Four tires x wheel-position mapping rests on the user (Vehicle Usage 5.2).

    Evidence: ; play.google.com/store/apps/details;hl=en&gl=US; tireoptic.com/en/legal/vehicle-usage
  • riskc. Handling of poor images, failure, uncertainty

No error, retake or quality-feedback UI is visible; the only evidence is a Help-center mention of 'retaking a failed scan' and Terms admitting results vary between rescans and that wrong-slot scans cannot be detected. Reports show no confidence value or range. Not observed in public material (not proof of absence).

    DocumentedHypothesis requiring user testing
    Evidence: tireoptic.com/en/legal/terms clause 2.3; tireoptic.com/en/legal/vehicle-usage clause 5.2;
  • weaknessd. Whether results distinguish measured facts from predictions/recommendations

The report presents tread depth to 0.1 mm per zone as plain numbers with 'Tread wearing low (3.6 mm)', but the Terms call every figure a probabilistic AI estimate and say 0.1 mm precision is not accuracy; this caveat is in the legal pack and store text, not visible in any report screenshot. Measurement (mm) and recommendation ('plan a replacement soon' / 'replace this tire') are separated in wording but not labelled as estimate vs advice.

UX evaluation

  • strengtha Ease of starting and completing a scan

Customer web flow needs no install or password: link, plate (+optional mileage), tick CGU, then guided photos wheel by wheel with a car-diagram progress cue. Vehicle is auto-identified from plate with a confirm step.

    Evidence: , , ,
  • strengthb Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

Instruction pairs a photo of a person crouching at the tyre with one sentence and an on-camera mask overlay that shows exactly what framing is expected; wheel position is always named.

    Shown in official demo
    Evidence: ,
  • weaknessa Ease of starting and completing a scan

Workshop app requires account creation with email-code verification and a password; entering via link from a partner; uploads can block on connectivity ('ne pas fermer l'app'). Fleet scale: one photo set per wheel for 4+ wheels (4-10+ photos per vehicle).

    Shown in official demo
    Evidence: , ,
  • riskb Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

The instruction card is partly hidden behind a 'Lire la suite' (read more) button and a green banner; the lightbulb tips icon is small. Tread-surface capture (workshop app) vs sidewall capture are different tasks and the difference is not explained in the screens seen. Crouching beside a wheel in traffic/car parks and the steering-lock angle needed may be hard for lay drivers.

    Hypothesis requiring user testing

UX evaluation

  • strengthb Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

Multiple redundant guidance layers: first-use walkthrough, landscape lock screen, tap-to-start tooltip, colour-coded distance bar, 7-second countdown with direction chevrons, optional audio beeps, gyroscope angle gauge for sidewall, and an infographic with six Do/Don't pairs. Physical feasibility depends on lift access (low-hanging phone under the car); the infographic explicitly says tires lying flat/on the floor or in stacks are unsupported.

    Documented
    Evidence: ; ; s03_official_howto_infographic_part2.png; part3
  • strengthd Whether results distinguish measured facts from predictions/recommendations

Measured zone depths (mm, blue = scanned, black = edited) are shown separately from the colour band and from free-text recommendations in the PDF; the report carries a disclaimer that it is a reference only. Weakness: colour bands (4.0/3.0 mm) are shop-configurable and not labelled as non-legal; zone values are 3 regions, not individual grooves, and the promo video uses '<= 3.0mm' while docs say '< 3.0 mm'.

    Documented
    Evidence: ; ;
  • weaknessa Ease of starting and completing a scan

Starting is gated: the app cannot be used without a licence QR code from an Anyline rep (7-day trial via booked meeting); no public self-service trial. Once inside, the flow is linear (vehicle ID, tire position, optional one-shot sidewall, 7 s tread sweep) and vendor claims a full 4-tire inspection in under 90 s (unverified).

    Documented
Evidence: ; docs-tirebuddy.anyline.com/docs/user-guide/getting…; iOS listing text
  • riskb Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

Reaching the tread shoulder-to-shoulder at 20 cm with one hand while moving steadily for 7 s, and the device whitelist (depth/focus-distance camera needed), may exclude owners with older phones or those without a lift; consumer usability of this physically awkward motion is untested publicly.

    InferenceHypothesis requiring user testing
  • riskc Handling of poor images, failure, uncertainty

Real-time prevention is strong (distance bar, orientation lock) and recovery is simple (Scan again, manual entry of zone values, retake sidewall). But no confidence/uncertainty value is exposed in the SDK result or shown in screens seen; failure message wording ('Image issues! Record for longer and move device slower.') is documented but not seen as a screen.

A single on-screen mask with one-line instruction ('Frame using the mask and make sure you have enough light') plus ideal vs avoid examples (too far, night, cropped, blur) and a landscape-mode tip; wheel-by-wheel sequence with a position confirmation question.

    Shown in official demo
    Evidence: ; v_s03_mobile_tyre_inspection_yt_thumb_Ran1pagjtYA.jpg ; tyreswift.ca-rool.com/assets/default/i18n/en.…
  • riska Ease of starting and completing a scan

Real-world completion is unverified: the public demo needs a phone camera and was not run; the iOS 17+/App Clip hand-off found in client code could add a step for some users; desktop users are bounced to a QR code.

    InferenceHypothesis requiring user testing
  • riskb Clarity/feasibility of capture instructions

No evidence of instructions for steering angle, wheel trims, dirt or a reference object; crouching at four wheels in a car park (night, rain, tight bays) may be hard for some drivers; the mask is a circle that may not fit different wheel sizes/angles.

    InferenceHypothesis requiring user testing
Evidence: Not observed in public material (stage 2/3 gap notes)
  • weaknessc Handling of poor images, failure, uncertainty

No screenshot or video of an actual rejection, no on-capture blur/distance meter, and no on-screen confidence score for AI recognition were found; the only visual quality-warning evidence is from a different (vehicle-damage) app.

    Shown in official demo
    Evidence: (non-tyre)

Five opportunities to validate

Hypotheses for a new smartphone product, not findings.

1Coach the shot and explain a bad photo

Problem
Owners shoot in poor light and cannot tell if the result is reliable.
Evidence
Four of eight show no failed-scan screen. Only TreadView and Anyline coach during capture.
Unverified
Live checks raise first-pass success on ordinary phones.
Test
12 to 15 owners, three light conditions, three prototypes. Measure usable-photo rate and retakes.

2Separate measured, estimated and recommended

Problem
One colour or number hides how reliable it is.
Evidence
TreadView shows estimate, range, confidence and legal limit apart. No product marks damage on the photo.
Unverified
Owners understand ranges without losing trust.
Test
24 to 30 participants, three report variants, a borderline 3.0 mm case.

3End with one next step that fits the urgency

Problem
Reports end in generic advice or a shop button whatever the certainty.
Evidence
Tire-kan: one shop button. TireCheck: "keep monitoring". Anyline: no booking step.
Unverified
Owners trust shop prompts from a scan tool.
Test
About 20 participants, three endings. Record choice and trust.

4Capture a tire on a car standing on the ground

Problem
The best-documented capture assumes a raised car and a technician.
Evidence
Anyline: raise the car, sweep 20 cm. Tire-kan: phone under the car. Tire Scan: a coin.
Unverified
An owner can get a usable image this way.
Test
About 20 owners, three phone tiers, compared with a calibrated gauge.

5Give the second scan a reason

Problem
Tires wear slowly; a one-off scan gives no reason to return.
Evidence
TireOptic and TireCheck keep history. No reminder in any of the eight.
Unverified
Owners return, and a forecast from noisy scans is accurate enough.
Test
4 to 6 week diary study, 15 to 20 owners, three reminder variants.

B Smartphone, but a business controls access
CaRool
Primary: workshops, tyre centres, fleet managers, leasers, insurers/OEM apps (B2B). Secondary: end customer/driver who receives a link, shoots photos and gets the report by SMS/email. Not a consumer app to self-download.

Auto text e.g. 'Consider replacing the tire soon'; editable by shop; no booking/purchase in-app
Rich real-time guidance; scanned vs edited values visually distinct; customer-ready PDF with photos; configurable thresholds and texts
Licence QR gate and sales-led access; cloud upload dependency; device whitelist; physically awkward under-car sweep; thresholds above legal limit and shop-defined; no confidence/uncertainty display
Medium-High: store screenshots, official 54 s film (frames at exact timestamps), official user-guide and SDK docs; no firsthand run (access gated)
C Mixed: smartphone flow plus hardware-dependent offers
TyreSwift
Primary: dealerships/workshops, fleet/leasing operators and remarketers (B2B). Secondary: end drivers/customers who receive an SMS link to self-inspect; workshop technicians/advisors for GarageScan and ramps.
Partial - the customer/driver self-inspection web app needs only a smartphone and the SMS link (no install stated; possible App Clip/instant-app path in code is unconfirmed). Workshop GarageScan needs a Bluetooth digital gauge (0.1 mm); drive-over and sidewall systems are fixed hardware.
Still photos of each wheel face and tread grooves through an on-screen mask (web app); handheld digital gauge readings via app; drive-over ramp scan at 5 mph; drive-through sidewall scanner.
Single yellow mask overlay with 'Frame using the mask and make sure you have enough light', per-wheel position prompt and confirmation questions, ideal-vs-avoid examples, landscape tip. No reference object; live distance/blur meter not observed.

On-screen/PDF/e-mail/SMS report; cloud dashboard (scan history, live scans, locations, users), analytics by model/size/technician, 'clients to contact' follow-up; API to VHC systems. No owner-side history seen.
Per-tyre 'next check in 6 months/6,000 miles', 'replacement to be planned', alignment advice, automatic quote and (template) quote acceptance/appointment booking; positioned for dealer upsell.
No install/account for the customer; very short guided flow (~2 min claimed); clear separation of measured mm vs recommendations in the PDF; wear shown as ranges with no-guarantee footnote; strong business follow-up tooling.
B2B-only access (demo request, login); best accuracy needs hardware; sample mobile report shows only qualitative labels and only the all-green case; asynchronous wait ('within 24 hours' in default copy) vs 2-minute claim unresolved; no error/low-quality visuals; colour reliance and jargon (3PMSF).
Medium - rich official report/dashboard images and a real sample PDF, but no firsthand run, no timestamped video frames (YouTube blocked), and customer-flow screens are marketing composites or default strings of a partner's template.
